A Beanie's Band-Aid

by Julie A. Saffrin

My second grade son and I sat organizing his Beanie Baby collection on the storage shelf in his bedroom. I came across a stuffed dog that had an inch-long rip near its mouth. My son had put a Band-Aid across it, but still, the plastic beans were leaking out of the hole.

“This one is wrecked, Jake,” I said, tossing it into his garbage can.

“Don’t throw it out, Mom!” he said, pulling it out of the trash. “How would you feel if someone stopped being your friend just because you had a cut on your face?”

With watery eyes I went to get another Band-Aid for the stuffed animal.
